How to get started with China journalism?

13.04.2025

China is and remains one of the most important reporting areas of foreign journalism. However, surveillance and restrictions on press freedom continue to make the work of foreign correspondents in China more and more difficult. At the same time, social contacts have recently declined, especially in the wake of the pandemic. There have been easier times to become a journalist with a focus on China. On the other hand, there's an urgent need for young journalists with China expertise in Germany.

So how to get started with China journalism? To answer this question, the German-Chinese Media Network, in cooperation with China.Table, is organising a workshop targeted at young German-speaking journalists and university/journalism school students. Experienced journalists with a focus on China and Taiwan will share their insights. They will talk about their career paths and the challenges they were and are facing. There will also be an opportunity to discuss and ask questions.

The workshop is aimed at young (up to 30 years) journalists, journalism students and university students with a China focus. Travel expenses for participation can be reimbursed up to 50 euros. The workshop language is German.
