Workshop: Taiwan under Trump
02.12.2024
Europe is not the only region facing even more uncertain geopolitical times with Donald Trump's election as US president. People in the Indo-Pacific are also worried about Trump's presidency. The security of many countries there depends on the involvement of the USA too. Increasingly aggressive China in particular is calling the existing order into question. At the centre of the action: Taiwan. The de facto independent, democratically governed island republic is claimed by the communist leadership in Beijing, and China's head of state Xi Jinping has repeatedly emphasised that he wants to incorporate Taiwan during his term of office.
Is Xi serious and is China now reaching for Taiwan? Will the USA remain Taiwan's protective power? How is Taiwan prepared for the change of power in Washington? What role does Trump buddy Elon Musk, who operates his largest Tesla plant in China, play? Is Taiwan's outstanding semiconductor industry, on which the whole world depends, a protective shield for the island? And what role could and should Europe play?
We want to explore these and other questions about Taiwan in a workshop (in German) and discuss them with three experienced Taiwan experts.
The workshop is primarily aimed at journalists, but is open to all interested people.
